Kimberly Benjamin
Happy Mama Healthy Baby Community Birth Doula
Hello, my name is Kimberly and I am a birth doula and childbirth educator located in Los Angeles County. I answered the call to become a doula to support pregnant women and their families during this sacred time in their life.
I have a deep passion and interest in serving marginalized and underserved individuals and communities. I have been privileged to serve communities at the local, national, and global. After undergrad, I interned with a non-profit organization in Houston, Texas working with children and families at-risk for involvement in the child welfare system. During my internship, I witnessed firsthand the health disparities that exist particularity among Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) families. Following the internship, I got the opportunity to become a Maternal and Child Health Volunteer in Peace Corps. I served in a primarily indigenous community in Guatemala where over 70% of births occurred at home with midwives. In the peace corps I provided health education to pregnant and postpartum individuals on a variety of topics such as establishing a birth plan, warning signs during pregnancy, exclusive breastfeeding, and newborn care. Additionally, I supported midwife community groups and learned about midwifery and a doula’s role during childbirth. This experience deepened my interest and study into Maternal and Child Health in the U.S. Along with receiving my Master’s of Public in Maternal and Child Health, I have also completed a DONA-approved birth doula training.
My interest to work with Happy Mama Healthy Baby Alliance comes from this organization’s work and commitment to promote high-quality, family-centered, evidence-based maternity and newborn care; specifically to underserved pregnant people. Additionally, I align with this organization’s goal to reduce perinatal and maternal disparities. I believe all birthing people deserve to have a dignified and positive birthing experience. I desire to partner with HMHBA as a volunteer doula and be apart of the important work to address the maternal and infant health disparities in the U.S.; specifically in Los Angeles County.
My birth philosophy is based on compassion, advocacy, and education. Along with the training I’ve received from seasoned birth workers, I bring an evidence-based approach as a public health professional with a focus in maternal and child health. I believe that every birthing person deserves a positive birthing experience and my desire is to empower and advocate for my clients to get what they want and need to have the best and safest birth. I am excited for the opportunity to support and walk alongside you on this journey!
