Amidst the refugee current crisis, more pregnant women from parts of the world where FGM/C is practiced are coming to America. Therefore, it is important for U.S. maternity and mental health providers to understand culturally-appropriate ways to provide care to these pregnant women who were circumcised as girls, and to promote an evidence-based, trauma-informed and culturally sensitive approach for birthing professionals to create a safe space for disclosure, service provision, and referrals.
We will also hear from a Nigerian woman who was cut as a child. She will speak candidly about her experience as a patient receiving OB/GYN care and mental health support. She will also share her experiences and insight as a midwife and nurse caring for women who have FGM/C.
